Embracing Autumn: The Seasonal Cycle of Hair Growth

Autumn, with its vibrant foliage and crisp air, is a season many of us eagerly await. It's a time of change, as the leaves transition from lush greens to warm reds and golds. But did you know that our hair goes through its own seasonal transition during this time too? In this blog post, we'll explore the seasonal cycle of hair growth and loss.

As the seasons change, so does our hair. Research suggests there may be a link between seasonal changes and our hair growth pattern, and understanding this natural cycle can provide insights into how to maintain healthy and vibrant hair throughout the year.

Our journey begins by understanding the four distinct phases of hair growth: anagen (the growing phase), catagen (the transition phase), telogen (the resting phase), and exogen (the shedding phase). Each phase has its duration and each hair follicle continuously cycles through them.

A case study of 823 women over a period of 6 years found that the maximal proportion of telogen hairs occurs in the summer, but as autumn arrives, we still experience a significant presence of these resting hairs. This suggests that the transition from summer to autumn might trigger an increase in hair shedding, as the body prepares for a new growth cycle.

A study based on Google Trends data found that although the hair growth cycle is extremely complex with multiple factors affecting it, there is a link between seasonal changes and hair growth cycle. Autumn's milder temperatures and decreasing daylight hours may contribute to the changes in hair growth and hair loss seems to be more common in summer and autumn months.

So, what does all this mean for you as you savor the autumn season? Here are some practical tips to embrace the changing leaves and your changing hair:

Adjust Your Haircare Routine: The transition from summer to autumn might bring about increased hair shedding. Consider adjusting your haircare routine to include nourishing treatments and gentle care to support your hair during this time.

Stress Management: Stress is a known factor that can influence hair loss. As autumn ushers in a busier season for many, consider incorporating stress management techniques into your daily routine, such as meditation, yoga, or mindfulness.

Consult a Professional: If you notice excessive hair loss or changes in your hair's health, don't hesitate to consult a healthcare professional or dermatologist. They can help determine if any underlying issues are contributing to the changes in your hair.

As we revel in the beauty of autumn, let's not forget that our hair, like the leaves, undergoes its own seasonal transformations. Understanding the seasonal cycle of hair growth and loss empowers us to care for our locks with greater mindfulness. So, as you sip on pumpkin spice lattes and cozy up in your favorite sweater, remember to give your hair the care and attention it deserves during this unique time of the year.
